Basket for an Overhead Conveyor LineÂ
Our customer inspects and certifies critical parts using Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) non-destructive testing. The cast metal parts can be heavy and oddly shapes, and need to be thoroughly cleaned on an overhead conveyor line before and after the FPI inspection. It’s very important that baskets and hooks used on overhead conveyor lines are designed so there is no way for the the loaded basket tip or fail, or the parts shift to fall out. Not only would falling parts create an obvious safety hazard, but oftentimes conveyor lines pass through remote areas where it would be difficult to recover parts or broken baskets that have fallen. Â
Our customer is processing a variety of shapes and sizes of valuable metal parts through their Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) line. Their conveyer baskets is required to be a strong basket, that would was easy for their operators to load and unload without slowing the conveyor line speed, hold the parts safely while moving or stopping abruptly on an overhead conveyor, and not obstruct the high pressure cleaning spray or drying air.
Three M Tool designed a Conveyor Basket with a strong frame and very open wire mesh to hold the castings safely without blocking the streams of washer spray or drying air. Our final design was 42″ long x 24″ wide x 12″ deep, with a strong 36″ tall trussed handle to attach securely and still hang freely on the overhead conveyor line. The basket frame is made from 3/8″ diameter rod with extra bottom crossbars to support heavy loads, adding a comfortable factor of safety for overhead lifting. We chose a 1 mesh x 0.120″ welded wire mesh, with 0.880″ openings, as the lining for the bottom and sides. The entire conveyor basket was 304 Stainless Steel throughout.
